Farming existed in Brookdale while southern Bloomfield industrialized in the town’s first century. The famed Morris Canal passed through Bloomfield and a woolen mill was a major supplier to the Union Army during the Civil War.
In the early 20th century GE, Westinghouse, Schering and the Charms Candy Company built manufacturing facilities there. After World War I, Brookdale’s farms became residential neighborhoods and beautiful Brookdale Park, and Bloomfield’s population grew. However, after World War II, industry began shutting down and Bloomfield entered a period of decline and population turnover. It is now experiencing a boom as New Jersey residents re-discover everything it has to offer: affordable housing, safe neighborhoods, strong town services, and easy access to New York City and Newark-Liberty International Airport among them.
