Known for its quaint downtown shops and restaurants, Caldwell rates high on the “walkability” scale. Real estate in this one-square-mile town includes both single-family homes and apartment buildings for housing its roughly 7,000 residents. It is named after General James Caldwell, who fought in the Revolutionary War against the British.
Included in New Jersey Monthly’s rankings of “Best Places to Live in New Jersey,” Caldwell is a suburban town located in northwestern Essex County. Caldwell sits about 16 miles from New York and is often considered a suburb of both New York and Newark, although it is an individual borough and remains separated from its surrounding towns by a large wooded area.
This magnificent town continues to develop with a steady population growth and a healthy housing and real estate industry. Public schools are plentiful and some are even historical, as the main Caldwell grade school dates back to 1872. There are four K-4 elementary schools that serve all students in the area as well as a middle school for grades 6 to 8 and the James Caldwell High School for students in grades 9 to 12.

Higher-level learning is also available through the Essex Country Vocational Technical School and Caldwell College, a small co-educational four-year liberal arts school.

This makes Caldwell an ideal town for commuters to New York City as well as to other areas of northern New Jersey. It is 19 miles from Manhattan. There is rail and bus service to NYC.
