Nutley, in Essex County, New Jersey covers 3.428 square miles and is bordered by Belleville and Bloomfield in Essex County, Lyndhurst in Bergen County, and Clifton in Passaic County. According to the 2010 United States Census, the population was 28,370 residents.
Historically, Nutley was home to stone quarries and mills, and even had an artists’ colony in the 19th century. It is also the birthplace of many famous people such as Annie Oakley, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s grandfather (John Bouvier, Jr.) and aunt (Edith Bouvier Beale of “Grey Gardens” fame), Martha Stewart, Frank Lautenberg, and Robert Blake to name a few.
Nutley was famous for being the headquarters of Hoffmann-La Roche from 1929-2015. There was a lot of research conducted here for oncology, virology, and inflammation; and Valium and Librium were created there. Plans are now in place to convert the property to a medical school.
