Roseland is a borough located in the western part of Essex County, New Jersey. The borough has a total area of 3.560 square miles, and is located about 20 miles west of New York City. Roseland began as part of Livingston Township, becoming its own township in 1908. Becker Farm, a sprawling dairy farm, once encompassed nearly half of what is now Roseland. From 1938 to 1972, the farm operated the miniature Becker Farm Railroad, also known as the Centerville & Southwestern Railroad. The railroad had a live steam locomotive, small-scale diesel locomotives, and small-scale passenger cars. This area has now become a large business/office park with easy access from I-280. There are still some remnants of the railroad on the property today.
