Located in Essex County, Orange Township retains an urban feel from its history as an industrial city. Named for the ruling house of Britain (House of Orange), it was formerly the home of 21 hat makers (making it known as the “hat manufacturing capital of the world”), many boot and shoe factories, and beer breweries. Since Orange had easy access to markets and affordable housing, many small and medium-sized businesses were formed in this area. Notable firms that began in Orange are the Monroe Calculating Company and the Bates Manufacturing Company, which produced office accessories such as staplers and stampers. The Orange Board of Education serves public school students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district has eleven schools: seven elementary schools (a mix of pre-k through 7, K through 7, and grades 2-7); Orange Preparatroy Academy (grades 8 and 9); and two high schools—Orange High School and the Career and Innovation Academy of Orange. There is also the Orange Early Childhood Center.

The academics are very good in the Orange Public School system, which earned accreditation as being the gold standard for measuring and evaluating school performances. Orange Public School students are required to do summer reading and writing projects to maintain their academic skills; there is a required dress code for each grade.

This district is an SDA District, which means the state covers all costs for school building and renovation projects under the supervision of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.

Transportation in Orange, NJ
The Orange and Highland Avenue stations provide New Jersey Transit train services. There are also many bus routes for easy access to Newark and other local areas. Orange is accessible by car via the Garden State Parkway and I-280 which connects it with the NJ Turnpike. It is also very close to Newark-Liberty International Airport.
